How we chose
Meditation places different demands on headphones than commuting or critical music listening. We prioritized long-session comfort, dependable noise reduction and a relaxed presentation for voices, ambient recordings and slow instrumental tracks. We also considered battery life, control simplicity and whether each design works in a particular setting, such as a noisy apartment, an outdoor walking practice or bed.
Active noise cancellation was important, but it was not mandatory. Some people find complete isolation calming, while others prefer to hear traffic, birds or family members. That is why the list includes over-ear ANC models, open-ear headphones and low-profile sleep earbuds.
Best for deep focus: Bose QuietComfort Ultra
Bose is the strongest all-around choice when household noise, HVAC rumble or distant traffic keeps pulling attention away from a session. Its plush fit is well suited to longer guided meditations, and the adjustable listening modes let you choose between substantial isolation and greater environmental awareness. Immersive Audio is available, although ordinary stereo is usually the more natural and battery-efficient choice for meditation apps.
Best for sound and app control: Sony WH-1000XM5
The Sony is a compelling alternative for listeners who divide their time between meditation, music and work. Its app offers extensive EQ and ambient-sound adjustment, while the microphones handle calls more effectively than most meditation-focused or sleep-focused products. The headband does not fold inward, however, so it occupies more bag space than the Bose.
Best affordable ANC option: Soundcore Space One
You do not need flagship headphones to soften steady background sounds. The Space One provides useful cancellation, long battery life and adjustable sound at a much lower price. Its default tuning is bass-forward, but reducing the low frequencies in the app helps narration and breathing cues sound clearer. Build materials and refinement trail the premium models, yet the practical value is excellent.
Best for mindful walking: Shokz OpenRun Pro 2
An outdoor meditation walk requires awareness rather than isolation. The Shokz sits outside the ear canal and leaves surrounding sounds audible, helping you notice bicycles, vehicles and other people. Spoken guidance remains clear at sensible volumes, and the light frame stays stable while moving. Because the design is intentionally open, it is a poor match for loud indoor spaces or anyone seeking silence.
Best for meditation in bed: Soundcore Sleep A20
Full-size headphones become awkward against a pillow. The Sleep A20 uses very small earbuds designed to reduce pressure for side sleepers, making it a better option for bedtime body scans and sleep stories. It relies on passive isolation and masking audio instead of active cancellation. That keeps the buds compact, but low-frequency disturbances will not disappear as effectively as they do with Bose or Sony.
Which type should you buy?
Choose Bose when maximum calm and comfort are the priorities. Pick Sony if you also want flexible everyday headphones for music and calls, or the Space One if cost matters most. Shokz is the safer format for guided outdoor practice, while the Sleep A20 addresses the specific challenge of lying on a pillow. No single design is ideal everywhere, so begin with where and how you meditate most often.
