How we chose
We prioritized meaningful noise reduction, secure fit, battery endurance and controls that remain usable with sweaty or gloved hands. Because mower noise includes both low engine rumble and higher-frequency mechanical sound, we considered two different approaches: rated hearing protectors that physically attenuate sound and consumer headphones that use active noise cancellation.
A published Noise Reduction Rating, or NRR, makes the 3M and ISOtunes models the most appropriate options for sustained exposure to loud lawn equipment. ANC headphones can make mowing sound less intrusive, but their cancellation circuitry is designed primarily for comfort rather than occupational hearing safety. We also favored closed designs because open headphones and transparency modes allow substantially more mower noise to reach your ears.
Best for most mowing: 3M WorkTunes Connect
The WorkTunes Connect combines Bluetooth audio with the familiar construction of an over-ear hearing protector. Its NRR 24 dB rating, uncomplicated controls and relatively affordable price make it the most sensible starting point for a walk-behind mower. Audio quality is tuned more for podcasts and background music than critical listening, but speech remains intelligible without requiring reckless volume levels.
Best for frequent yard work: ISOtunes LINK 2.0
ISOtunes is the stronger fit for people who mow often or move between mowing, trimming and workshop tasks. Its rechargeable battery lasts far longer than a typical yard session, while an NRR 25 dB rating provides documented passive attenuation. The rugged frame feels purpose-built, although it is bulkier and less refined than ordinary headphones.
Best premium ANC option: Bose QuietComfort Headphones
Bose's QuietComfort Headphones are noticeably lighter and more comfortable than certified earmuffs, particularly during a long session. Their ANC handles steady low-frequency engine noise well, and physical buttons are easier to operate outdoors than touch gestures. Choose them for a riding mower or general everyday use—not as a substitute for hearing protection when measured sound levels call for an NRR-rated product.
Best sound and call quality: Sony WH-1000XM5
The WH-1000XM5 delivers detailed audio, excellent low-frequency cancellation and strong microphones. Its light clamping force is comfortable, but the non-folding frame is awkward to store and the touch-sensitive controls can become unreliable with sweat or damp fingers. The headphones also lack an official water-resistance rating, so they are best reserved for dry weather.
Best budget ANC option: Soundcore Space One
Soundcore's Space One offers effective everyday ANC and unusually long battery life for its price. It cannot match Bose or Sony for refinement, and its plastic build transmits more handling noise, but it is an economical choice for occasional mowing and travel. Like the other consumer ANC models here, it has no occupational NRR and should not be treated as protective equipment.
A note on safe listening
Do not raise music volume simply to overpower the mower. If the equipment manufacturer recommends hearing protection—or if you need to shout to communicate at arm's length—use properly fitted, rated protection. For especially loud tools, follow workplace or equipment guidance regarding dual protection, such as earplugs beneath earmuffs.
