How we chose
We compared Sony headphones that are widely available through Amazon, prioritizing sound quality, comfort, active noise cancellation, battery life and microphone performance. We also considered practical differences such as folding designs, multipoint Bluetooth, water resistance and wired listening.
Value mattered as much as outright performance. Sony’s flagship models are impressive, but many listeners do not need the strongest possible noise cancellation. The WH-CH720N and WH-CH520 cover everyday listening for considerably less, while the ULT WEAR targets buyers who prefer a more forceful low end.
Best overall: Sony WH-1000XM5
The WH-1000XM5 is the most complete option here. Its active noise cancellation is particularly effective against aircraft rumble, office ventilation and steady traffic noise. The lightweight chassis remains comfortable during long listening sessions, while eight microphones and AI-assisted processing help voices sound clearer on calls than they do through most budget over-ears.
Its tuning is warm and accessible rather than strictly neutral. Sony’s Headphones Connect app provides EQ controls, multipoint management and ambient-sound adjustment. The main drawback for travelers is that the earcups rotate but the frame does not fold inward, resulting in a relatively large case.
Best value: Sony WH-CH720N
The WH-CH720N delivers the core features most people want—active noise cancellation, multipoint connectivity and long battery life—without approaching flagship pricing. At approximately 192 grams, it is notably light and creates less head pressure than many affordable ANC competitors.
Noise cancellation and build quality are a step behind the XM5, and the ear cushions can feel shallow. Nevertheless, this is the sensible choice for commuting, studying and general home use when cost matters.
Best for bass: Sony ULT WEAR WH-ULT900N
ULT WEAR replaces the older XB-series formula with a dedicated button offering two levels of bass enhancement. The standard tuning already sounds full; engaging ULT2 produces the kind of physical sub-bass impact that suits hip-hop, electronic music and action movies.
Unlike the XM5, this model folds for easier packing. Its energetic tuning will be excessive for listeners who want natural vocals or accurate acoustic instruments, but the app’s equalizer provides useful room for adjustment.
Best Sony earbuds: Sony WF-1000XM5
The WF-1000XM5 brings Sony’s premium noise cancellation to a pocketable true wireless design. The earbuds are smaller than the preceding generation, support high-resolution LDAC streaming on compatible Android devices and offer detailed, full-bodied sound.
They are the strongest choice for workouts and light travel because the IPX4 rating handles sweat and splashes. Fit is more personal than with over-ear headphones, however, and the foam-style tips require careful sizing to deliver the intended bass and isolation.
Best budget option: Sony WH-CH520
Buy the WH-CH520 if you want an inexpensive wireless pair with exceptionally long runtime and do not need active noise cancellation. Its on-ear design is compact, lightweight and easy to carry, while multipoint Bluetooth makes switching between a phone and laptop straightforward.
The trade-offs are limited passive isolation, no wired audio input and increasing ear pressure during long sessions. For podcasts, casual music and calls in quieter places, it remains a strong entry-level choice.
