How we chose
We prioritized headphones that are explicitly presented as sweat- or water-resistant, preferably with a published IPX4 rating or better. That matters because many popular noise-canceling over-ears—including premium travel models—have no official moisture protection at all. We also considered stability during movement, cushion maintenance, control accessibility and battery life.
Sound quality still matters, but workout headphones have different priorities from critical-listening models. Strong bass can help maintain energy, while effective active noise cancellation reduces the need to overpower loud gym music. We favored physical controls because they are generally easier to use with damp hands than touch panels.
An important caveat: an IP rating applies to the tested enclosure, not necessarily every material or long-term wear. Sweat contains salt, which can degrade synthetic leather, adhesives and exposed metal. Wipe down any pair after training and let it air-dry before putting it in a case.
Best for most workouts
The TREBLAB Z7-Pro offers the most balanced combination of IPX4 protection, active noise cancellation and modern everyday features. Its over-ear design provides useful isolation in a busy gym, and the transparency mode makes it easier to hear an instructor or announcement. It is the most versatile choice here if the same headphones need to handle workouts, office listening and travel.
The less expensive TREBLAB Z2 is a practical alternative for buyers who care more about battery life and simple controls than sophisticated ANC. Its sound is energetic rather than analytical, but that character suits exercise playlists. The larger fit can shift during burpees or sprint intervals, so it is better for lifting, walking and machine-based cardio.
Best for dedicated training
The JBL Under Armour Project Rock Over-Ear Training Headphones were designed around gym use rather than adapted from a travel headphone. Their ventilated, washable ear cushions are a meaningful advantage after sweaty sessions, and the firm fit is reassuring during lifting. They are bulky, however, and replacement parts may be less convenient to find than those for JBL’s mainstream headphones.
Raycon The Fitness Headphones are another workout-specific option. Their IPX4 construction, swappable cushions and long claimed runtime make them convenient for frequent gym visits. They produce a pronounced low end that works well for hip-hop and electronic music, although listeners wanting neutral vocals or detailed acoustic reproduction should look elsewhere.
Best for maximum bass
The Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 stands apart because its adjustable sensory-bass system adds physical impact as well as audible bass. That can be motivating for strength sessions, and the effect can be reduced when it becomes distracting. The headphone also works well outside the gym thanks to its long battery life and app controls.
It is not the coolest or lightest option, though. The large ear cups can trap heat, and the bass mechanism adds weight. Choose it for controlled lifting or moderate cardio rather than intense, high-impact circuits.
A note on fit and hygiene
Over-ear headphones naturally retain more heat than sports earbuds. If possible, take short breaks between sets, wipe moisture from the cushions with a soft damp cloth and avoid harsh cleaners. Users who sweat heavily should favor removable fabric cushions over sealed synthetic leather.
